Cornflakes Tribute region
With its signature red and blue carpet, strange mountains, and many crazy figures, Cornflakes Tribute is the epitome of silliness. It is also a piece of Opensim history, preserved on HG Safari grid thanks to a friend of Cornflakes Woodcock, Wordfromthe Wise, who maintained the region on his own server for some years after Cornflakes died.
Cornflakes Woodcock left Second Life for Opensim long before hypergridding was a common activity. His home was on OSGrid. His regions included a Sandbox where anyone could experiment and build. His home region featured a huge collection of his prim based creations which were available to copy for free. He was not a recluse, but like so many people he was mainly focused on building by himself.
Prim creations can be a challenge. Today, with Blender and Meshy and dozens of sites where you can upload pre-made assets, it's easy to forget how much ingeniousness was needed to make a statue or a scene. Cornflakes was inspired by the ordinary things of everyday life, and saw the comical side in all of it. He was the subject of, and was referenced in, a number of HG Safari blog articles including "Cereal Builder" in 2012 and "Cornflakes Woodcock" .
The death of Cornflakes really only came to the attention of Opensim residents about a year after his passing. While it would be wrong to intrude into other people's real-life business and to interfere with their right to privacy, the uncertainty about what had become of this well-liked creator struck a chord with many and strengthened the resolve of the community to show more kindly interest in one another. The era of Opensim being considered the preserve of virtual hermits was coming to an end.

The introduction in 2015 of Cornflakes Week as an annual Opensim festival was intended to serve two purposes. It is a way to remember and celebrate the early Opensim creators, and to look around us and notice who may be missing from our community. It also a uniquely Opensim event untethered from the nations and religions of the real world, bringing Opensim people together simply as that, netizens of our hyperverse.
Held during the final seven days of February, Cornflakes Week is meant to be a flexible celebration. Bright colors and silliness are the main ingredients that any builder can take and re-imagine in their own way. Artists like Cherry Manga and Nyx Breen have taken the concept and given it a new direction in the post-prim world. Using copies of the original objects, Thirza Ember has created a number of avatars from Cornflakes characters, which can also be made into NPCs, something that did not yet exist when Cornflakes was working in Opensim.
The number of grids that participate in Cornflakes Week varies from year to year. It's always celebrated on OSGrid where they have an impressive collection of Cornflakes memorabilia. HG Safari tours also celebrate annually on different grids. We have been to Craft, AMV, Winxtropia, Neverworld, Pangea, and at our local clubhouse from time to time.
At its height, Cornflakes Week was celebrated on eleven grids over the seven day period, back in 2017, and it is to be hoped that more grids will adopt the celebration and make it unique to the style of their grid.
The Cornflakes Tribute sim was located on the grid Scripted Magic for a time, and Wordfromthe Wise hosted Safari visits during Cornflakes Week on more than one occasion. Now in its new home, we hope to bring together as much original Cornflakes inventory as possible to create a complete collection of his assets.
